Halifax Innovation District is pleased to announce its inclusion in a select network of innovation districts convened by the Global Institute on Innovation Districts (GIID). The network is sharing best practices and invited districts are participating in strategy sessions focused on district governance, venture capital funding, and public/private sector partnerships among other topics of central importance to geographies of innovation.

“Innovation Districts are important economic drivers for cities. We look forward to collaborating with our district colleagues in supporting the growth of startups and scaleups, and social and corporate innovation globally,” says Wendy Luther, President and CEO, Halifax Partnership.

Halifax Partnership is leading the advancement of the Halifax Innovation District - with support from the Province of Nova Scotia and the Halifax Regional Municipality and in collaboration with public, private and post-secondary partners - to increase the number of viable startups and scaleups in Halifax and to strengthen Halifax’s and Nova Scotia’s innovation ecosystem.

“Whether newly established or mature, COVID-19 has accelerated the urgency for geographies of innovation to engage with their peers. The Global Institute’s interim network is uncovering purposeful insights about how districts such as Halifax can mitigate the pandemic’s impacts and reposition themselves for recovery and beyond,” shared Julie Wagner, President of The Global Institute on Innovation Districts.

Innovation Districts are highly productive and densely concentrated areas in cities where people, firms, anchor institutions, and intermediaries together create an innovation ecosystem focused on generating and accelerating new ideas. This invitation-only network will enable the Halifax Innovation District to learn from and contribute to the advancement of its district peers while, together, shaping the theory and practice of global innovation.
